Over the course of my twelve years of teaching at The Columbus
College of Art and Design, I have had the honor and pleasure to work with many
extremely talented artists and filmmakers, many of whom have gone on to
successful careers in the animation industry. Below is a sampling of some of my students' strongest works. These projects were either developed within my Layout and Timing class at CCAD or one-on-one with me as Independent Study projects.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Elda The and Theresa Zysk ('06)
Elda and Theresa worked together over the course of a year through two Independent Study courses in the fall of 2005 and in the spring of 2006 to develop a seven and a half minute animated film entitled Peka. Elda and Theresa are both currently working at Gaia Interactive in San Jose, CA as lead and senior artists respectively. Below is a trailer for the film they produced while at CCAD.

Steve Umbleby ('08)
Steve Umbleby grew up in Ohio before studying animation at CCAD. Since his graduation, he has worked as a director for Bento Box
Entertainment which produces Bob's Burgers for Fox and is currently a storyboard artist at Disney TV.
Work began on the film above, Edmund, in the Layout and Timing class at CCAD and continued through two Independent Study courses, one in the spring of 2007 where Steve further developed the layout on his film and again in the spring of 2008 where we worked on the animation. This film eventually screened in a number of festivals around the country including the 2008 Animation Block Party in NY City.

Barabara Benas graduated from CCAD in 2010 and is currently an animator and storyboard artist at Augenblick Studios in New York where she was worked on such television shows as Ugly Americans on Comedy Central. Barbara worked on this film, Always, Only, Ever, in the fall of 2009 through an Independent Study class with me where she developed her storyboards and the layouts (the key poses and environments) to her animation. This film screened in a number of festivals including The Columbus International Film Festival, The Florida Film Festival, the Animation Block Party, The Rocky Mountain Women's Festival as well as the Good Vibrations Film Fest to name a few.

The Collaborative Film Projects Class Production of Lumin
At the beginning of the 2012 fall semester, sixteen students began working on a film entitled Lumin, which was created from scratch and taken to completion in sixteen weeks. This five minute film was written and storyboarded in the first two weeks of the class, fully animated and finished on December 10th. The film went on to win a number of awards including two Telly Awards, first place in the Society of Illustrators Student competition, an Award of Excellence from the Los Angeles Movie Awards and also screened in film festivals around the world including the Leeds Young Film Festival in Leeds, England, The Toronto Animation Arts Film Festival and the Austin Film Festival in 2012 to name a few.
The film production courses are designed to mimic the experience one might have while working in an animation studio on a production in 'the real world'. Weekly deadlines are extremely important and are monitored through online production tracking software by myself and a student production coordinator. Production is fast and furious, but the expectations are high and the end results are extremely rewarding. For Lumin, I acted as the Production and Directing Supervisor, guiding the production in places but also letting the lead animators function as essentially directing animators throughout the process. We were very proud of Lumin, and a number of the students who worked on this production are now working in the industry including Chris Campbell, who is working as a concept artist at Riot Games, and Alan Becker, who is an independent animator with over 200 million views online.

The Collaborative Film Projects Class Production of Nautia
Nautia was the second film produced through this production course class and was completed in December of 2014. Again, I supervised the production of this film, which was completed over the course of one semester. The film also won two Telly Awards and screened at the Wexner Center as part of the Ohio Shorts Festival just as Lumin did. Students who worked on this film include Beth Wollman, who currently works on the Comedy Central animated series The Legends of Chamberlain Heights as a storyboard artist.
